Tokyo Ghoul season 3 is approaching quickly, but thankfully we have a little something to hold us over until April.

The upcoming season (titled Tokyo Ghoul:re which is based on the ongoing manga) comes three years after Tokyo Ghoul Root A and has easily been one of the most anticipated series this year. With just a few weeks until it’s premiere, fans have been happy just to see glimpses of the character designs – but Studio Pierott went a step further and released additional character art in addition to the series opening theme.

The visuals showcase a new group of characters to follow (I can’t say too much to avoid spoiling it for some) but if you watch the opening, you will see something that suggests we will follow-up with those who are left from the original storyline that we’ve come to love. The ending of the second anime series deviated from the manga to an extent, so how (or if) they address the differences will be interesting to see how they try to get back on track with the manga plot.

It is currently unknown if Funimation has the licensing rights to the popular series, but based on their distribution of both animes and a stellar live action film it can be assumed we should expect it to be available through the growing anime empire soon. For those of you wanting more insight or spoilers, the manga is currently far ahead and being published by Viz Media which teases about the plot:

Haise Sasaki has been tasked with teaching Qs Squad how to be outstanding investigators, but his assignment is complicated by the troublesome personalities of his students and his own uncertain grasp of his Ghoul powers. Can he pull them together as a team, or will Qs Squad first assignment be their last?
