Will Half of Future MCU Films Be Directed By Women?

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has broken grounds in many ways, it can’t be denied that it’s still a male-dominated universe…for now, anyways.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has broken grounds in many ways, it can’t be denied that it’s still a male-dominated universe. The fact that after all these years a Black Widow movie is only now in the works and that a good chunk of Ant-Man was spent pointing out how much more qualified Hope would be in the role are only a few instances of how this issue is reflected onscreen (or, I suppose, not on screen). And while Marvel is taking some steps to get more of their female characters on screen, rumor has it a greater effort is being made for women behind the camera as well.

Victoria Alonso, Marvel's executive VP of physical production, has said that she is hoping for a day where half the Marvel films have female directors. While Captain Marvel is the first film in the franchise to have a woman at the helm–Anna Boden (alongside Ryan Fleck)—but Alonso added that she is hoping for more:

“Here's the thing: We want the best person for the job. I don't think it's fair to the movie to say, 'This has to be directed by a man,' or 'That has to be directed by a woman.' I think it has to be a conscious search for the best human, and hopefully the best human, as we continue to fill out our slate, is half and half."

Alonso has also come out in support of the Times Up movement and says that she is trying to address the treatment of women in the film industry:

“When I walk into a room, I do a head count of males and females. When I leave, I say it. Every room, every time.”

While the idea of things naturally setting into half and half sounds nice in theory, without any upcoming announcements or strong indication of how Marvel will actually tackle the issue beyond simply saying they’ll search for the best human, there isn’t a concrete way to predict what will happen next.
