After what is seeming to be a tradition of summer shark movies the last few years with films like The Shallows (2016) with Blake Lively, and 47 Meters Down (2017) with Mandy Moore, comes another shark chomp down the pike, and while all of these shark movies have had their share of fun, this film looks to be taking the most advantage of that word. Jason Statham stars in The Meg (2018), the title due to the protagonist shark creature thought long extinct called a megalodon. And according to the Internet Movie Database’s (IMDb’s) synopsis of the upcoming flick, this bad boy is supposed to be around 70 FEET LONG!

The trailer certainly has an expected ominous beginning, and it doesn’t take long before we see the actual film’s star along with what some (including this writer) might consider a jump scare. It also doesn’t take long however for the trailer’s mood to shift as the upbeat and jazzy “Beyond the Sea” starts blaring despite the calamities and chaos insuing with the savage beast. This does not take away from the fact that there are sure to be many moments of intense action and bone-chilling imagery, but it does suggest that we are in for a lighter tone, which is always nice for a monster summer popcorn movie. An exact plot is difficult to ascertain from this trailer, but we can probably assume Jason Statham hires a crew to hunt this devil down. What’s for sure is that from the trailer the movie looks to have no shortage of laughs or thrills, especially the latter.

Directed by Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure (2004), Last Vegas (2013)), The Meg will star Jason Statham (Crank (2006)), Li Bingbing (Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)), Rainn Wilson (The Office (2005-13)), Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black (2013-)), Winston Chao (1911 (2011)), and Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead (2015-)), and dives into theaters at the end of this summer on August 10, 2018.
