PopWrapped Weekly Roundup – Films Opening This Week: March 6, 2020

The first week of March is almost at its end, but it is only the beginning of what looks to be a week full of great new movies being released.

As we finish off the first week of March, we are greeted with a variety of new films being released this weekend. Here is a look of the Top 5 movies being released the weekend of March 6th.

Pixar’s latest film is set to release this Friday, March 6th. By the same director as of Monsters University, this film sees two brothers bestowed with a staff to resurrect their late father for 24 hours. However, the spell goes awry and they are only able to resurrect his legs and therefore must go on a quest to resurrect the rest of their father before the 24 hours are over. As with most Pixar films, it is backed by a star studded cast with the brothers voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, respectively. Other big names in the cast include Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Octavia Spencer, and Mel Rodriguez. Pixar’s always provides us with a spectacle, and this movie seems like it will not disappoint.

2. The Way Back

Ben Affleck’s latest film follows a former basketball player turned alcoholic after he is offered the opportunity to coach the failing basketball team from the high school in which he graduated. However, as he begins to strengthen the team he realizes he has his own inner demons he needs to work on. This film marks the second collaboration of Ben Affleck and the director Gavin O’Connor, with their first film together being The Accountant in 2016. This film looks as if it will hit pretty close to home for actor Ben Affleck, as he has been open about his own problems with alcoholism in the past. For fans of sports dramas, this is one to look out for.

3. Beneath Us

This film is the directorial debut of the director Max Pachman. It follows a group of undocumented workers after they are held against their will in their employer’s mansion. Very topical and politically modern, this film seems like it will be a tough, but essential viewing. It has been in the works since 2011 so we can expect that great care has gone into making it. This seems like one we won’t want to miss.

4. First Cow

This film marks the first (and only) film on this list directed by a female director. The newest release from production company A24 (who also brought you Moonlight, Uncut Gems, and The Lighthouse), it follows a cook who teams up with a Chinese immigrant in the 19th century. As they travel to the Oregon Territory they find themselves on the run from vicious hunters. They then formulate a plan to get rich quick, but it relies on them secretly using a wealthy landowner’s dairy cow. I hope I wasn’t the only one absolutely confused by this plot. I can’t say it didn’t make me curious, however. A24 has yet to disappoint, so it’s a safe bet that this movie will not be the first to break this trend.

5. Hope Gap

This film starrring Annette Bening and Bill Nighy follows a family after the father decides to divorce his wife after 29 years of marriage. Based on the play “The Retreat of Moscow” written by the director William Nicholson, this one looks like it’s going to be a deep and intense one. Fans of Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story will probably enjoy this dramatic divorce story.
