Ronnie Watts Drops Her ‘I Don’t Trust U At All’ EP

“I hope people can take comfort in listening.”

As with many artists, Ronnie Watts grew up inspired by music; finding solace, support and comfort in the lyrics of her favourite bands and solo acts. Driven to pursue to her own dreams of making her mark on the business, she built a recording studio in her basement and began turning her own thoughts and feelings about life, relationships and everything in between into songs of her own, making her music immensely relatable. By sharing these songs with the world, she’s already earned herself a growing and dedicated following across social media platforms and until the world and life as we all knew it was all but ground to a halt by the ongoing pandemic – was a regular on the New York live music circuit. While live shows have been put on the back-burner, the crisis hasn’t stopped Ronnie from writing and recording, and she’s just dropped her ‘I Don’t Trust U At All’ EP.

The central theme for the EP came as a result of a trip she took from Rochester to just outside NYC to meet up with a boy. The trip didn’t go as planned but it did provide her with valuable insight and ideas for her music, as she explains: “A day before I left to go visit him he told me he loved me. The next day, I found out he was with someone else. I felt really blindsided but I’m grateful for what we went through because I got some of my favorite songs out of it. It didn’t really hit me until I got back home. It was the simple things like not FaceTiming before bed, and seeing him post pictures with his new girlfriend. My notes became full of lyric ideas and I’d stay up past midnight writing like crazy. After a few months passed I ended up sending the songs that you hear on the EP to him. That’s when I started letting go of things. As personal as these songs are to me, now that they’re released, they’re everyone else’s just as much as they are mine.”

With the Corona Virus meaning everyone, Ronnie included, has been restricted in being able to visit certain places and mix with other people for the last several months, recording the EP was a rather unique experience for her. “Almost all of it was done remotely so it was lots of emails back and forth,” she says. “I started writing the songs that are on the project over a year ago, not really knowing what they’d turn into or if anyone else would ever even hear them. The songs on this EP are very personal to me– I feel like I’m doing an injustice to everyone listening if they’re not completely intruding into my deepest thoughts. For me, I value trust more than anything else in any kind of relationship. It takes a lot to gain my trust so when it broke, I exploded with these songs. Young people have the power of feeling in extremes. I romanticize everything. I overthink everything. It’s chaotic, tragic, beautiful, heartbreaking and breathtaking all at the same time, and I wanted that idea to shine through on the EP. I hope people can take comfort in listening.”
