Reneé Dominique Talks Collaboration With Jason Mraz, Virality, and More

Having rose to fame through the success of her YouTube channel, of which she has amassed millions of views for her sweet and euphoric renditions of hit songs, Reneé Dominique now steps away from the camera and into the studio with two time GRAMMY AWARD winner and regular chart- topper Jason Mraz to release the blissfully sweet new single ‘Could I Love You Any More.’

Played as a conversation about love between a man and a woman, the duo takes it in turns to swoon and serenade throughout this powerful and touching duet. Produced by Mraz alongside Josquin Des Pres, Michael Natter and Fabien Renoult, ‘Could I Love You Any More’ combines smooth and breezy guitars with sweeping vocal performances to create a warm and intimate release that sees both artists shine throughout.

PopWrapped (PW): Renee, you started to find success and popularity quickly after the release of your “The A Team” cover by Ed Sheeran, which went viral and helped jump start your musical career. Tell us a little bit about the reaction from that cover and how you knew, “Okay, I got what it takes”.

Reneé Dominique (RD): I was very enthusiastic once that first ever video that I posted on Youtube hit 1000 views. To me, that was already a big thing…especially back then. I never really expected anything much from posting videos on my channel at first. All I wanted to do was have an outlet where I can express myself and share my renditions. Once people started expressing their compliments and thoughts about my videos and how it helped them get through their day to day, or remember a certain nostalgic memory, a loved one, a past lover, or inspired them to make music as well, that all served as fuel for me to continue on with my YouTube journey.

PW: In 2019, you got the honor of having a collaboration with the amazingly talented, Jason Mraz. How did that come about and did he leave you with any advice that you plan to take along with you as your career continues to progress?

RD: Basically, one of the producers Jason has worked with – Josquin Des Pres – came across a Samsung Galaxy commercial that I sang in on TV one night. It played again after a while and it finally caught his attention. He then ran to the computer, looked up the commercial and who was the voice behind it, and found my YouTube channel. Next thing I know, I get an email on Christmas Day from them asking me if I was open to a collaboration. It was the best Christmas gift I got that year.

Jason is definitely one of the people I truly admire and respect. He has been a staple in my playlists since I was in middle school. To not just sing with him, but get a little glimpse of who he is as a person with the time we spent together has been a huge stepping stone in my journey as an artist. We were walking on the beach in Singapore, shooting our music video, and I asked him a lot of questions about music and writing. One piece of advice I will always take with me is: just keep writing. Even if it sucks. Even if you don’t like it. Out of the hundred songs that you won’t like, there will always be something special that will eventually come out from it.

PW: You are constantly uploading covers of classics, as well as some of your own original tracks to YouTube. How do you feel that YouTube has helped artists be heard? More specifically, yourself.

RD: I am forever grateful to the platform for how it has bridged the gap between dreamers and their dreams. I am where I am, and I have achieved what I have achieved because of YouTube. It has connected me to the rest of the world and given me opportunities I never thought I would land by just simply doing what I love in the comfort of my own home. I am glad I started 8 years ago. Where the platform was solely about creating content out of pure passion, and fame was just a bonus. I started making videos just because I simply loved to sing, and I’m blessed to be where I am now because of that passion.

PW: For some people who may be new to you as an artist, how would you best describe your overall artistry to them?

RD: Salty and sweet, walking down your street, with a guitar or ukulele, and two dancing feet. An old soul, who loves mixing the old with the new, and helping the younger generation appreciate the old more, but with her own twist. My sound is very easy on the ears, calming, but also soulful, and upbeat depending on which song you choose. Bringing you nostalgia, inspiration, energy, or hopefully just a smile if you were to come across my music.

PW: We love to talk about collaborations with artists here at PopWrapped as it is always great to see multiple artists/sounds come together for a track. Other than Jason, do you have any artists in mind that you would love to collaborate with?

RD: Well, speaking of collaborations, I just collaborated with multi-platinum artists Bloome for my latest single called ‘The Rose’, now up on all platforms. It is a more upbeat, fun tune compared to my other releases. But I am glad to be able to show that other side of me to my listeners. I am fortunate to be able to work with such amazing and friendly people in the business. I would definitely love to collab with Ed Sheeran on a song, and maybe be produced by Pharrell Williams. Singing with Daniel Caesar would definitely be a dream too.  So many people on my list!
