High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2, Episode 10: Recap & Review

Opening night is getting closer for The Wildcats. How will they pull this off? High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is on Disney+.

With only two episodes left of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: left, the pressure is on. The Wildcats have lost out on rehearsals, so there is a lot to go over. Spoilers ahead for those who have not seen the series as of yet.

The Transformation:

The Wildcats are back from Spring Break and are about to rehearse the Beast’s transformation. Ashlyn and Ricky take their positions and rehearse the scene. As Ashlyn sings Home, the transformation begins but it just isn’t right. Ricky rips the mask off and throws it to Natalie knocking over set pieces. Miss Jenn plasters a smile on her face and claims that everything is great. The students take a break, Ashlyn checks on Ricky and Carlos goes to check on Miss Jenn.

In her office, Miss Jenn informs Carlos that North High have acquired the technical set design aspects from the Broadway production of Beauty & The Beast. Miss Jenn continues to panic but Carlos ensures her everything will be perfect. She admits that although High School Musical was great it wasn’t the smoothest opening night. Carlos says they will be perfect and Miss Jenn practices her gracious losing face.

The Wildcats are all gathered at Salt Lake Slices. Carlos informs them of his conversation with Miss Jenn. They decide to split up into teams to come up with the best technical execution for the transformation. Nini suggests boys vs girls and the team split up. In Big Red’s basement, our favourite red head has gathered all of his tools so that they can win. Ricky gets a facetime call from Lily, she calls for his advice and the two share a weird moment. EJ and Carlos arrive and Big Red powers up his drill.

At Ashlyn’s house, Kourtney whips out some faux fur and comes up with an idea for the transformation. The girls and Seb are going to create a double fabric cape for the transformation. The boys all converse and eat pizza. Big Red gets a text from Ashlyn telling him to create something that spins. EJ grabs two old skateboards, Big Red thinks about it and the boys agree to stay all night.

Back in her office, Miss Jenn confides in Mr Mazzara about her students. She shares that if they lose at The Menkies it may crush the spirit of The Wildcats. At Ashlyn’s house, everyone is sewing and creating a new look for Ricky. The girls make a joke about Carlos but Seb doesn’t laugh. He confides in the girls of about his insecurities in the relationship. The girls advise him to tell Carlos how he feels. Nini curiously asks Gina about EJ and she tells them there is nothing romantic between her and EJ. Gina then references the chocolates from Valentine’s Day.

Nini asks about the chocolates, Gina explains the situation and Nini leaves in a huff. Back at Big Red’s, the boys are testing out their transformation device and Carlos confides in them about his relationship. Big Red tells him that Seb thinks the only reason they’re dating is because he is the only other gay guy at school. EJ confides in the boys about Gina and admits his break up with Nini really affected him.

Kourtney calls Big Red and tells him that they got the original Broadway plans from Howie. The guys all head to the auditorium to meet the girls. Back in her office, Miss Jenn is undergoing therapy with Mr Mazzara. He tells her she is vicariously fighting her own battles through her students. The two hold hands and share a moment but it quickly gets awkward. Back in the basement, Ricky is strumming on his guitar and Carlos walks in. Ricky texted Carlos to help him write a song for Seb.

At East High, the students arrive at the auditorium. They look at the plans for the transformation and Nini makes a comment about secrets. Ashlyn suggests getting out Ricky’s harness from Getcha Head in the Game and the students disperse. Big Red asks Kourtney about Howie and she says he has finally figured out her “love language”. Carlos walks in and steals Seb away for a minute. EJ and Gina awkwardly catch up and he asks her out. She says yes and the two share the sweetest moment in the whole show.

In the rehearsal room, Seb sits down to hear the original song In a Heartbeat sung by Carlos and played by Ricky. The moment is cheesy and beautiful we can’t help but stan. Ricky and Carlos hug it out and share a “bro” moment. In the auditorium, the brand new transformation is underway. Big Red pulls the harness and just as they get their hopes up the rope breaks and Ricky falls right on top of Ashlyn.

High School Ouch!

This episode definitely feels like a filler episode but the show must go on and we will unpack it all. Someone who is not having a great time in this episode is Miss Jenn. She is giving off Mr. Schuster vibes ala her relationship with the students. She is very personal with them and although she means well it doesn’t paint her in the best light. We will allow her this one moment of weirdness.

Although they have been on and off the rocks this season, Carlos and Seb are not breaking up. The two shared a sweet and cheesy moment to the song In A Heartbeat. Although the song sounds exactly like Rain by The Script, it is not the strongest song of the series. Joe Serafini and Frankie Rodriguez may be all kinds of cute in their real life relationship but the dancing and the chemistry felt off in this scene. I adore them together but it just wasn’t there for me.

Goodbye Ricky and Nini, hello EJ and Gina. For the last few episodes, these two have been the new favourite ship for fans of the show. We have all been waiting for the moment EJ would ask her out and we finally got it. The chemistry between these two is adorable and we are all holding out hope for an EJ and Gina kiss. Someone who was not so cute with Gina was Nini. After Nini found out about the box of chocolates mix up, she was not too happy. She even had a swipe a Gina in the auditorium about this. We will have to wait and see how that situation pans out.

Something that was completely random and just thrown into this episode was the reconciliation of Kourtney and Howie. Although we don’t see Howie in this episode we find out that he and Kourtney are back together. This was not even hinted at in the last episode so it feels like the writers just threw this in. We didn’t get to see this pairing as much so it is quiet a shame.

The final moment of the episode was truly a game changer for The Wildcats. Just when the thought they had North High beat with their Beast transformation, the harness breaks and Ricky falls on top of Ashlyn. Ouch! Although we never got to see how badly they were hurt, we heard Ricky scream in pain. Let’s hope Ricky and Ashlyn aren’t in a full body casts otherwise they stand no chance against North High at The Menkies.

This is definitely the weakest episode in the series so far. The song In A Heartbeat is pretty forgettable and sounds like any other generic pop song. Only two major things happen in this episode in order to keep us waiting for the next episode. This was a filler episode, not shocking in a series like this but they are never the strongest. The fans are all anticipating the next instalment as opening night is approaching for the Wildcats. Will it be a Bop to the Top or will it be A Night to Remember for all the wrong reasons?

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is available to stream on Disney+. New episodes every Friday.
