Ireland has produced some incredible talent over the decades including U2 and The Script. One of the newest talents to emerge from the country is FYA FOX, who has already earned support and praise from the likes of Hot Press, and been featured on several prestigious Spotify playlists. She’s now unveiled her latest single “Need It” and PopWrapped caught up with her to learn what most inspires her song-writing and what she has lined up for the rest of the year.
How did you first discover your love of music? Did you have a musical upbringing or was it something you just found a connection with in some way?
I would sing and dance around the house so my Mam sent me to music lessons.
As an artist who hails from Ireland, has any Irish music inspired your own creations?
From time to time the tin whistle makes an appearance but I’m not sure it would fit my vibe!
Pop music has always been your forte – what do you love the most about the genre?
I’ve always been obsessed with the pop scene, probably because it was so far from anything I knew.
You’ve just released your newest single “Need It.” Is there a particular story behind the track that you can share?
I was in the studio one day and got this notification from someone and it was the idea that literally one second can make you completely obsessed.
“Need It” has a hard-hitting, fiery chorus that lays all cards on the table – what was your favourite part about making this track, and what made you choose it as a single?
Collaborating with Matt and Simon on this track was definitely a highlight -t hat bass gets me every time. I played the demo for my sister, who is really critical, and the moment she said “play that again”, I knew it would be a good single!
The track has this sort of mellow middle 8 where you begin to reflect on the situation and how you’ve overcome toxicity – what advice would you give to anyone also feeling this way?
Yeah it’s a hard one; everyone deals with things differently but I think the best thing to do is after taking some time, pick yourself up, put on your favourite outfit and give two fingers to anyone who thinks they can dump on your day! You could also release a mega banger and let them hear it on the radio.
Who would you say is your biggest musical influence?
My number one influence would be London Grammar. I’m also a massive fan of Miley Cyrus and Florence & The Machine.
Which three songs are you listening to the most right now?
“Mood Ring” by Lorde, “He Don’t Love Me” by Winona Oak and “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” by Lana Del Rey.
How do you approach song-writing and from where or what do you find inspiration?
I find a chord progression I like, start humming some melodies and then lyrics usually are last for me – I know so many do it the complete opposite way round.
What can fans expect from you in the coming months, up to the end of the year?
A headline show in Whelan’s in Dublin on Nov 13th, and definitely more music. I don’t like to keep anyone waiting, so an EP might be on the cards.
