5 Hit TV Shows Based on the DC Universe

Disney made a big splash when the company purchased Marvel Entertainment and announced a bunch of TV shows set in the Marvel universe for their streaming platform. However, DC comics have been well represented on television for several years and are now being featured on the HBO Max streaming platform. If you haven’t been keeping up with all of the DC content on the small screen, these are some of the shows you should check out.

1. Stargirl

“Stargirl” chronicles the adventures of high school student Courtney Whitmore. After discovering the cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the titular superhero and spawns a new generation of heroes known as the Justice Society of America. The show, which was created by Geiger comic creator Geoff Johns, debuted in 2020 on the DC Universe streaming platform but also aired on The CW network. The second season debuted on The CW in August of 2021 and the show has already been renewed for a third season.

2. Batwoman

Caroline Dries developed this series based on the DC character of the same name for The CW network. It is considered part of the Arrowverse continuity. The debut season features Bruce Wayne’s cousin Kate Kane who decides to become Batwoman when he disappears from the city. The focus of the second season shifts to a former convict named Ryan Wilder who takes over the role of Batwoman after Kate Kane is believed to have died in a plane crash. Ruby Rose was originally cast in the lead role but was replaced by Javicia Leslie when Rose left the production.

3. Legends of Tomorrow

“Legends of Tomorrow” is another CW show that was spun-off from characters introduced on “Arrow” and “The Flash.” It is also set in the Arrowverse. The seventh season premiered in October of 2021. The series began with the story of Time Master Rip Hunter who recruited a team of superheroes and villains to help him avenge his family and save humanity after the immortal Vandal Savage conquered Earth and killed Rip’s wife and son. It features a time travel storyline where the heroes of the story attempt to stop Savage’s rise to power by altering the timeline.

4. Superman & Lois

In this series on the HBO Max streaming platform, Clark Kent and Lois Lane are taking on the challenge of parenting two boys in modern society. To make matters more complicated, the pair are unsure whether their sons will inherit their father’s superpowers when they grow up. When they return to Clark’s hometown of Smallville, their lives are upended by a mysterious stranger.

5. Harley Quinn

This HBO Max animated series is in its second season. The story follows Harley Quinn after she has severed ties with the Joker and set out to become the head of her own criminal organization in Gotham City. She is joined by Poison Ivy and a cast of DC oddballs.

There are plenty of stories for DC fans to enjoy on the small screen. If you’re caught up on the current series, older seasons of several shows are available on various streaming services.
