CES 2022: sony Announces ‘Sony Mobility’ and New SUV Concept

On Tuesday, tech giant Sony brought a huge surprise to CES 2022 in Las Vegas, announcing its new mobility division, called ‘Sony Mobility, Inc.‘ which will focus on mobility and EV efforts.

Back in 2020, the company announced its “VISION-S” initiative at CES, which is aimed at contributing to the evolution of mobility, and exhibited a prototype sedan vehicle at its booth. In December of the same year, Sony began public road testing in Europe and began 5G driving tests in April 2021.

And here we are two years later at CES 2022, where Sony announced and exhibited an SUV-type prototype vehicle, dubbed “VISION-S 02”, which the company says uses the same EV/cloud platform as the prototype sedan (VISION-S 01).

The Vision-S 02, according to the company, is powered by two electric motors, which each produce about 200 kilowatts (268 horsepower each), with 20-inch wheels and weighs up to 5,467 pounds.

As part of its drive towards safe and secure mobility, Sony stated that Sony Mobility, Inc. will launch in the spring of this year, where the company will be further exploring its entry into the EV market.

“With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our content mastery, we believe Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility,” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said at the CES 2022 press conference on Tuesday.

What we don’t know about Sony’s latest move is whether the tech giant will be building future vehicles under its brand or partnering up with other automakers, along with pricing and battery size.
