It has been announced that Paramount Pictures is in talks to reboot the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. Murphy starred as Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who finds himself in the swanky world of Beverly Hills after landing a position on a murder investigation.

The film opened in 1984 and launched Murphy’s career.

The news of the reboot was leaked by Shawn Ryan (creator of The Shied) via twitter. Ryan had been working on a TV pilot based on the movie following Foley’s son.

Ryan wrote the pilot as well as acted as executive producer with Murphy. Although the show tested well it was passed up by networks but caught Paramount’s eye.

Ryan stated, “Sad to report that efforts to land Beverly Hills Cop pilot at another network have failed. This iteration is dead for now. Good news for fans of franchise is that the pilot tested so well, it has caused Paramount to put another #BHC movie into development.”

The only actors attached to the project thus far are Murphy who will reprise his role as Axel and Brandon T Jackson who will play his son Aaron.

Josh Appelbaum and Andrew Nemec have signed up to write the script and are familiar with the reboot game. Both have previously worked on the Mission: Impossible franchise and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake.

As excited as I am for some reboots (cough cough TMNT) I can’t help but wish that Hollywood would come up with some new material. How many times can we see the same story told? Hopefully Beverly Hills Cop 4 will focus more on the future and not on Murphy reliving his glory days!
