A Look At The 2013 BRIT Awards!

Abbie Bethell

Staff Writer

This week, some of the biggest stars in the music industry descended on to the red carpet, for the 2013 BRIT awards. On what was a very cold night in London, stars such as Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Ed Sheeran and Frank Ocean all took to the red carpet prior to the award show.

Funny man James Corden presented the awards for the 3rd consecutive year, hoping to put last year’s mishap behind him, where he cut Adele’s acceptance speech for ‘Best Album’ short.

There were live performances from Robbie Williams, Mumford and Sons, Ben Howard, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Muse, Emeli Sandé and Justin Timberlake. One Direction sang their cover of the Blondie hit song ‘One Way or Another’ which currently stands at No.1 in 63 different countries, all proceeds going to Comic Relief. Justin Timberlake premièred the first ever live performance of his song ‘Mirrors’ and Emeli Sandé closed the show singing a mash-up of ‘Clown’ and ‘Next To Me’.

The 2 hour 15 minute show appeared to go without any noticeable mishaps, apart from the odd swear word here and there. 10 awards were handed out; here is the list of the winners:

Alt-J – ‘An Awesome Wave’

Surprise winner of the night was upcoming artist Ben Howard, managing to scoop both ‘British Breakthrough Artist’ and ‘Best British Male’. Not so surprising was Emeli Sandé winning ‘Best British Album’ and ‘Best British Female’, which was well deserved due to her success in 2012. One Direction also won the ‘Global Success’ award due to their ‘world domination’.

Highlights:

  • Adele winning the ‘Best Single’ award for Skyfall, in my opinion she’s well deserved of the award, she won the Grammy for it, and now all she has to do is win the Oscar!

  • Justin Timberlake’s performance of ‘Mirrors’ JT looked like he was back where he belonged, on the stage! His performance was faultless and he looked rather dapper too.

  • Frank Ocean winning ‘Best International Male’ I felt of all the nominee’s, Frank Ocean deserved the award the most, and he seemed very humble accepting the award which is always nice to see.

  • Seeing Sharon Osborne back on our screens, in the UK we haven’t seen or heard from her for quite a while, so it was great to see Sharon back to her old ways, joking about Harry Style’s ‘stick’.

  • The mentioning of Harry Styles itself. Anyone would think the awards were just about him, with the camera cutting to him when Taylor Swift was walking on to present an award, Sharon Osborne saying ‘where is Harry Potter’ and many more boy toy related references. Fair play to him though, he seemed to take it all in good nature!
