Bryan Fuller is not a household name (yet), but he should be. And maybe he will be once his new series “Hannibal” hits NBC, premiering this Thursday. The show will star Hugh Dancy as Will Graham and Mads Mikkelson (of Casino Royale fame) as the famous Dr. Hannibal Lecter, as well as Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford. Here is a look at his recent interview with Indiewire

Regarding Hugh Dancy, according to Fuller Claire Danes’ “baby daddy” (her words, not ours) is a big fan of all the blood that comes with taking on a project about Hannibal Lecter:

“I asked him, ‘Are you cool with the blood?’ He was like, ‘Oh my God, I love it! I love being sprayed with blood. It was like he was able to transcend where the character was in the scene and be a man who enjoys the ghoulishness of the world in an infectiously fun way.”

Now, casting a Hannibal who won’t immediately and eternally be overshadowed by Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) is no easy feat. Fortunately for NBC, Bryan Fuller found Mads Mikkelson to play the part:

“Hannibal in the books is an Eastern European gentleman…For me, casting a foreign actor was the way to go because Hannibal is foreign. He is other. He’s an exotic. That was something that Mads brought to the character, with this erudite quality of experience and worldliness. Hannibal has to be a grown man that demands respect, or it doesn’t work.”

It sounds very intriguing, don’t you think? We’re definitely excited to see what Mikkelson brings to the table in this role. Unfortunately, at the moment, MGM has the rights to most of the memorable characters featured in Silence of the Lambs.  Fuller tried to retain the right to use characters like Buffalo Bill (you remember him – “It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again”). He still has an inkling of hope, though:

“My secret hope is that they’ll see the show and think it’s really cool and say, ‘Okay, we’ll partner with you and let you use the Clarice Starling character and this will become the definitive Hannibal Lecter story.’ That’s my dream.”

Let’s hope that this dream comes true!

Meanwhile, Fuller has another exciting possibility on his plate. As we all know it was a travesty that his incredible show “Pushing Daisies” was canceled after just two seasons, but it looks like he may be getting ideas from “Veronica Mars”. Do we sense another exciting kickstarter on the horizon?

“I am having those conversations with my agent right now. I’m trying to find out how realistic it is, but I’m taking it very seriously because I would like to revisit that world and I think that there is a great zombie movie to be had in the world of “Pushing Daisies.””

“Pushing Daisies” is about a man named Ned. He’s a simple man, a pie-maker, a dog-owner, the guy next door…also, he can raise the dead! It’s funny, it’s whimsical, it’s adorable, and we want more of it! And we’re not the only ones, either:

“I’ve reached out to the cast and everybody is very excited about the prospect. It’s not just a whimsical thing. I’ve already been in contact with someone at Kickstarter and Rob Thomas, and I have so many questions for them. Now I just have to figure out what we would need, how we would pull it off, and hopefully set the wheels into motion.”

You guys, this might just happen (knock on wood)! How exciting is that?!

Be sure to tune in to NBC this Thursday at 10pm for the premiere of “Hannibal”, and keep an eye out for news on a “Pushing Daisies” kickstarter!
