A Tribe Called Quest has earned their inaugural nomination for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s Class of 2022.
They are one of the 17 musical acts on this year’s ballot. A Tribe Called Quest has been eligible since 2015. The eligible band members for the nomination include Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, and Jarobi White.
A Tribe Called Quest is credited for shifting the hip-hop landscape forever and expanding the creative possibilities for the genre. Their freedom of expression, ingenuity and minimalist brilliance continues to inspire generations of hip-hop artists and fans. They will always evoke more than just a sound.
It consists of members of the Native Tongues collective, and A Tribute Called Quest is hailed as a “pioneer of alternative hip hop music.” They have been nominated for four Grammy Awards.
They have been one of the most artistic, eclectic, and perceptive rap groups of the 1990s; moreover, they expanded the creative possibilities for the genre, inspiring generations of hip-hop artists and fans.
A Tribe Called Quest based their music around more laid-back samples, where they confronted social issues in the African-American community with abstract philosophy.
They formed back in 1988 right out of high school in Queens, New York. Their lineup featured Q-Tip serving as the producer-leader, Phife Dawg as the emcee, Jarobi White as the spirited everyman, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad as the DJ and co-producer.
A Tribe Called Quest was the subject of the 2011 documentary film “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” which was directed by Michael Rapaport.
