A Twinkie Tale: On The Hunt For Creme Filled Treasure

Ever since I received word that Twinkies would be making their highly anticipated return this past Monday, I have patiently waited for the chance when I could walk into my local grocery store and buy my first box. I haven’t been able to do that since my son Dean was only 3 months old. Monday morning comes around and I am bursting at the seams to get a box of Twinkies. Sure enough, by the time I finally get to the first store, a Safeway in my neighborhood, there were NO Twinkies to be had.

As I found myself overcome with that feeling of disappointment, I discover a box of Hostess Cupcakes, which I quickly grab and run to the nearest cashier. I bought them because I felt that after waiting almost a year for Twinkies, the cupcakes would hold me over until I could find a box of Twinkies. It was starting to seem like I would never find them! CVS didn’t have ANYTHING, not even the cupcakes! When I contacted Target in my search for Twinkies, the girl on the phone barely understood what I was saying. She asked me why I was looking for a product that didn’t exist anymore. I actually drove to Target and still couldn’t find them.

Just when I had decided that I was ready to give up, I thought about just how much trouble I had gone through to find Twinkies, and how many stores I went to and called looking for them. Finally, I got through to a Safeway two towns over from where I live and had to put them on hold for 20 minutes in order to make sure they would still be there when I got there. Lucky for me, I was able to grab the Twinkies and get out in one piece. As I am standing in line, holding onto the Twinkies for dear life, people in line start asking me how much they can pay me for my Twinkies. The highest amount I was offered was 50.00. After what I had gone through to get them, I decided that I wanted to have the Twinkies more than I wanted 50.00. For those of you who haven’t been able to locate them, I share my hunting experience with you, so it may help guide you in this crazy, not to mention never ending search for Twinkies.

They taste exactly the same way they did 8 months ago! These new Twinkies weigh 42.5 grams each, with a 10% reduction in size. According the label on the Twinkie box, two Twinkies have 270 calories and weigh a total of 77 grams. The old Twinkies were 150 calories per cake. Twinkies current sales records are out of this world, with it being said that sales are in excess of over 50 million Twinkies sold so far. When I spoke with the manager at a local Wal Mart, he stated that when they put them out on the floor, it caused many customers to get into fights.

If you’re lucky enough to find these prized, creme-filled treasures; guard them with your life and happy hunting!
