Well-tuned cries of foul play were heard across the music world and Internet land when NBC decided at the end of last season that they were not going to renew the a cappella singing competition, The Sing Off. But today their website is singing a different tune; it says “Returning Soon”
The show, hosted by Nick Lachey, with judges Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles & Shawn Stockman, started airing the holiday season of 2009. The show was an instant niche hit, especially with college a cappella fans – boasting the Tufts Beelzebubs, the Yale Whiffenpoofs, and the Dartmouth Aires amongst some of it’s most notable contestants.
The show was hailed with breathing life back into the a cappella genre. For example, Glee has a group of singers, The Dalton Academy Warblers that were actually voiced by the Bubs back in season two. And who could forget Pitch Perfect, one of the most talked about movie of 2012.
The show makes careers for its winners too, especially season 3 winners, Pentatonix. The group of 5 is one of the smallest to ever appear on the show but also one of the most talented and unique. Listening to their arrangements each week was insane. They created unique arrangements of some of the hottest songs on the charts and proved that they could write original songs like “The Baddest Girl” from their debut album.
The next batch of a cappella groups have about a month to prepare their best numbers for auditions. The audition schedule goes like this:
- April 27th in Chicago
- May 4th in Nashville
- May 11th in Los Angeles
- May 18th in New York City
No premiere date for the new season has been released or hinted at but as soon as that is released we’ll be sure to let you know!
