According to The Hollywood Reporter, film actress Glenne Headly has unexpectedly died. It was on June 8th, and she was 62. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
Headly was most known for her roles as one of the title detective’s (Warren Beatty) lovers by the name of Tess Truehart in Dick Tracy (1990) with Madonna, the American heiress Janet Colgate alongside Steve Martin and Sir Michael Caine in the comedy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), and Iris, the inspiring wife of the virtuoso title character (Richard Dreyfuss) in Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995).
She was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Supporting Actress as Elmira Johnson in the TV mini series Lonesome Dove (1989), which also starred Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Glover, Robert Urich, and Diane Lane, and Outstanding Supporting Actress as Aunt Ruth in the mini series/special, Bastard Out of Carolina (1996), which also starred Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jena Malone, Dermot Mulroney, Lyle Lovett, Christina Ricci, and Michael Rooker.
Other notable film credits: Sgt. Bilko (1996), Babe: Pig in the City (1998), Disney’s Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004), The Namesake (2006), Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon (2013).
Other notable television show appearances: Parks and Recreation (2009-15), The Night Of (2016), Monk (2002-09), Encore! Encore! (1998-99), ER (1994-2009), Frasier (1993-2004), and Grey’s Anatomy (2005-).
She was most recently seen as Bonnie Holland in this last April’s The Circle (2017), which had the front running stars of Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, and John Boyega.
We are lucky that we will see at least one more film starring Glenne Headly at the beginning of this holiday season with the action-comedy, Villa Capri (2017), currently listed as being in the post-production stage. It is being directed by Ron Shelton, director and writer of Hollywood Homicide (2003), Tin Cup (1996), and White Men Can’t Jump (1992), and writer of Bad Boys II (2003). Besides Headly, it will star an impeccable cast of Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Rene Russo, Joe Pantoliano, and George Wallace. It will hit theaters on November 22, 2017. Be sure to catch that.
It’s always heartbreaking when such a talented actress and human being goes too soon. This writer personally will always remember her for her role as Iris Holland in the aforementioned, very special movie about music, Mr. Holland’s Opus. Her performance was nuanced yet unquestionably powerful alongside her equally enthralling co-star Richard Dreyfuss, who recalls her as being “just perfect.” Rest in peace, Ms. Headly. Thank you for the joy and performances you gave to us.
