She has a Grammy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, Brit awards and smashed records left, right and centre and now British singer Adele can claim another one. Her ballad, “Someone Like You” has become the first song to pass the one billion download mark. Trailing not far behind are Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”.
Music downloads only became legal in the past 9 years and since then this way of purchasing music has taken off. With the advent of digital downloads, the purchase of singles rather than albums has soared again with fans having the ability to download and own songs they hear and like immediately as well as pick and choose the songs they want to have rather than purchasing a whole album. According to Entertainmentwise, digital downloads now make up 99.6% of singles purchased in the UK with approximately three million tracks downloaded every week and 188.6 million tracks downloaded in 2012.
The managing director of the Official Charts Company has said, “The explosion in download sales over the past nine years means we are genuinely living in the digital music age – with Adele as our queen!”. And long may she reign.
The top 10 most-downloaded songs of all time are:
- Adele “Someone Like You”
- Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera “Moves Like Jagger”
