NBC is truly upping its original content game with this one. The network has gained the rights to air Virgin Galactic’s first-ever commercial flight into space. The entire event will be broadcast next August. For those of you wondering – and even if you weren’t – the ship that will be making the voyage is called, what else, the VSS Enterprise.
The journey will be shown as part of a three-hour special that will air on the network’s Today program. According to DigitialSpy, the program will likely show viewers exactly what it would be like to be aboard a commercial space flight.
“Through NBC Universal’s multiple platforms and overseas network partners, viewers from around the world will get to experience this where were you moment,” said Sharon Scott, president and general manager of Peacock Productions.
Virgin Galactic is the brainchild of Sir Richard Branson. He will, of course, be embarking on the Enterprise‘s maiden voyage, along with his two children. In Scott’s words, “Without a doubt, Sir Richard and his children taking the first commercial flight into space will go down in history as one of the most memorable events on television.” Somehow we don’t think that’s an exaggeration.
If you want in on the action first-hand, tickets are still available for the flight. Of course, you’ll need to have $250,000 lying around if you want to purchase one.
