Ally Barron is not afraid to share her experience entering a new chapter of life after a heart-breaking relationship. The blooming singer-songwriter and actress continues to be vulnerable with her audience through her dreamy new single “T-Shirt.” The single sees Ally expose the growing pains that come with ending a relationship and finding the empowerment to move on from a love you once cherished more than anything. It takes you on a journey that is all too familiar for many young women, the lyrics exposing those inconsiderate men that string you along without any regard for your feelings. She expresses the sentimental value an article of clothing can hold when a significant relationship ends and that is all you are left with – a t-shirt that once held little value is now a constant reminder of what you once had.
Barron connects with her audience through her personal, honest and emotive lyrics. She can and is not afraid to admit that even when you know you have to move on, that can be the hardest step to take. She uses her platform and her music to give other women the courage and motivation they need to stay away from toxic relationships, an issue she also addressed on her alt-pop track “What’s Her Number.” With her debut EP Sincerely AB coming soon, PopWrapped caught up with Ally to find out more about T-Shirt” and to discover the advice she’d share and give to other women going through a break-up.
Where did the inspiration or idea for “T-Shirt” come from?
I was inspired to write this song after the conclusion to a long relationship. The song is a metaphor and symbolizes letting go so you can make room for what’s important in your life. Personally, this song reminds me to move on from negativity, no matter how hard it may be.
What did your creative process look like when writing the song?
The creative process behind “T-Shirt” was lengthy. It started in a zoom session with my co-writer, Tony Ferrari, and producer, Nick Pingree. We talked back and forth about the concept and the writing came naturally, but the melody just wasn’t there for me. It took a few attempts to get the production and melody perfect, but after taking a few risks and challenging my comfort zone, I’m proud of how it turned out.
What helped you take the steps you needed to move on from this relationship?
Living in the present and surrounding myself with a great support group is what gets me through situations like this. My friends and family have always been there to remind me to stay positive and search for new and better opportunities.
What advice do you have for other young women in a similar situation?
My advice would be to try and understand that you can’t rely on someone else to make you happy. Surround yourself with a great support system who encourages you to be your best self and keep yourself busy with things that benefit your mental health.
What is the best break up advice?
Staying busy and having someone there to help you through the tough times it the best thing you can do. The less time you have to think about it and dwell on the memories, the faster you will get over it. Find a new hobby or focus on your mental health and you’ll quickly find yourself in a healthier state.
