Following on from a hugely successful run at London’s Art Theatre, theatre fans in the North-West of the UK will soon get to enjoy the delights of the acclaimed American Idiot as it comes to Manchester’s Palace Theatre next month from April 5 to April 9.
The show features the music of California rockers Green Day and was established after the global success of the album from which the production takes its name. It tells the story of three boyhood friends, post 9-11, as they contemplate life in a world that has been forever changed.
With lyrics written by Green Day front-man Billie Joe Armstrong, this latest production sees singer and former X-Factor contestant Amelia Lily in the role of Whatsername and established theatre actor Matt Thorpe in the role of Johnny.
Lily was mentored by Kelly Rowland on the 2011 series of the hit reality show and went on reach number two in the UK charts with her debut single “You Bring Me Joy.” Thorpe has previously performed in productions of Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You and Hairspray.
Songs included within the production include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, the emotional “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, “Holiday” and the explosive title track from the album, “American Idiot”, which saw Green Day’s career see an unmitigated resurgence. Several songs from the bands’ 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown are also included within the show.
American Idiot has already won two Tony Awards and in 2010 won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album while this most recent production was a runaway winner at the recent Broadway World UK Awards winning five and has received seven WhatsOnStage Award nominations.
