Ever since NBC cancelled The New Normal at the end of last season, we have been eager to see Andrew Rannells return to our TV screens. Well we don’t have to wait much longer as Rannells is returning to Girls for season 3.

Rannells has had the semi-regular role of Elijah, Hannah’s (Lena Dunham) gay ex-boyfriend since midway through season 1. He left the series early in season 2 after The New Normal was picked up. Its cancellation after only one season has freed up his schedule again, making it possible for his return in season 3.

And we may be seeing a lot more of Elijah in the future. Deadline reports that if HBO renews the series for a fourth season, it is likely that Rannells would be promoted to a series regular.

And he will certainly be welcomed by the cast with open arms. Two weeks ago, HBO released a behind-the-scenes video from the set of season 3. In the video, which confirmed Rannells return, Dunham explains that Rannells is “so much fun” and that “we needed that guy on the show.”

Though Elijah and Hannah did not part on the best of terms last season, given the shenanigans the two get up to together, it shouldn’t be long before they’re back to their old tricks, and I personally, can’t wait to see that.

We couldn’t agree with you more. Girls season 3 premieres with a two-episode season premiere on January 12, 2014 on HBO.
