In the last two years, since she moved to LA, Anie Delgado has passionately pursued her ambitions of making and sharing music with the world. Working with producers PJ Bianco and Nick Lee, who have worked with The Jonas Brothers and Stray Kids respectively, she saw her confidence grow as she began to hone her skills of writing from her heart and making music that truly held and holds meaning to her. In 2019, she began work on what will be her debut EP, set for release later this year, with Sam Nicolosi, and she recently unveiled her debut single “Daydream.”
Having dropped the official video for the single earlier this month, PopWrapped are delighted to premiere the behind-the-scenes video, and we also spoke to Anie about the story behind the song, whether she’ll step behind the camera herself someday and what the year has in store for her.
What is it about “Daydream” that made you feel it was the right fit for a single release?
Each song from my EP has such a different vibe and feel. “Daydream,” in my opinion, was the perfect intro to this inner world of mine I am sharing within the EP. the intoxicating, whimsical instrumentation you hear in “Daydream” is a theme constant throughout the EP and I thought daydream was the best introduction to this sound. I think it’s a song most people can relate to.
Is there a particular story or idea behind the song?
The song is about wanting and again that’s a common theme on the EP. I feel like we went through a period in time in where culturally it wasn’t cool to want. It was cool to be apathetic, but desire is a feeling I feel very strongly, and I wanted to share that with people. Although the song itself is about that intoxicating desire, the journey is realizing you have everything you need within yourself and if it’s meant to be it’ll be meant to be. Verse 2 is my favorite for that reason. When I wrote it, I was writing about a long-distance relationship I was in and how badly I wanted to show this person my whole self but I also had the confidence to say “ok take it or leave it buddy I am going to do great things and be happy with or without you.”
Where did the concept for the video come from?
When I started to write the EP, I was in Oaxaca, MX. I remember I was swimming in the pool at the bed and breakfast I stayed at and I was thinking about what I wanted my debut EP to say. Of course, I didn’t predict we’d be in a pandemic when I released it, but I did decide that I wanted to make the record about my inner world and about my identity. Since I went to acting school, I have always grabbed inspiration from astrology so in getting inspired to write this EP I was thinking a lot about myself as Venus – because I’m a Libra. I was thinking about her power and her chaos. I was really inspired by how powerful she is in her beauty and grace and I decided that it was the perfect visual for daydream because I feel like the song possesses that same power like a siren bringing sailors into shore with ease. That’s also why we shot by the ocean – aside from Venus’ folklore – I think much like Venus the ocean is mysterious, powerful, and beautiful.
How do you find the experience of making music videos, and how much impact if any, did the Coronavirus pandemic have on the making of this one? Any highlights from the shoot/its creation?
Music videos are really fun for me because I love performing and I used to act on camera. I also am a really visual writer, so I usually have half a million ideas that the director Brandon Buczek has to rein in. Corona virus definitely made me simplify which I think all in all was a blessing in disguise. I had more elaborate set ups in mind and looks in mind, but because of the pandemic I decided to shoot without a hair and makeup team and without a stylist. I think this was a really great challenge for me to just accept myself as I am on camera, a journey I’ve been on this year anyways because naturally I’m not putting makeup on every day in quarantine. Also, I usually have a heftier crew and this time it was just me, Brandon, the DO Herbert Moran, and my manager Kelly Blakely. It was essentially them filming me playing on the beach. Funny story — it was actually pleasantly warm the day we shot, but we had to shoot a pickup day because I was nervous to get into the water because there were a bunch of seals around (are they dangerous to humans? I don’t know I was just freaked out) and so Brandon and I went to Will Rodgers beach the next week to shoot and it was FREEZING. That’s where we got that opening shot. It looks warm but we shot that in November and I was freezing.
Have you ever thought about maybe stepping behind the camera and giving directing a go yourself sometime?
I have! I actually wrote a few scripts while in conservatory. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. Maybe I’ll self-direct one of my music videos one of these days. As it is, a lot of the visuals and ideas come from me, but I’m grateful that Brandon Buczek is such an amazing creative partner and is always down to do whatever crazy ideas I have and enhance/add to them. Although as I work with him, I’m getting a better sense of how things work on set so maybe I’ll be able to direct one day.
What do you want viewers to take from the video/song when they watch and hear it?
I want them to leave feeling confident in themselves. Don’t get lost in your daydreams but feel them and channel that energy into reality.
Finally then, is there anything you can tease about what’s ahead for you? How’s your 2021 shaping up?
2021 has been the busiest year of my life already. I’m at home all day but somehow, I manage to be busy most of the day! I have a lot of music and visuals coming out. My next single comes out next month with a visual a few weeks after. I am really passionate about a few social issues, so you can also expect to see some social projects from me this year.
