As the United States geared up for Fourth of July festivities, President Donald Trump was only focused on his Twitter account. After his spiteful attack last week on MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, we all thought the President of the United States could not be much more ridiculous on his Twitter feed; but we were wrong.
While Trump was supposed to be holed away at his Bedminster golf course in New Jersey, aides tried their hardest to keep the President’s schedule free for the three days he was there. Trump on the other hand had different plans.
Over those three days, he let off what can only be the weirdest and crudest tweets a President has ever fabricated. He continued his attack on media, specifically CNN. His entire presidency seems pinned on tearing down what he calls “fake news” and spreading awareness as to how they are hindering his presidency, similar to the “cloud” of distraction he called the Russia investigation. The more bizarre aspect is the hate fueled tweets next to tweets regarding diplomacy and peace with other nations.
The tweets include the usual rhetoric against media, against anyone who is against him, but with a special detest for CNN.
Trump tweets about #FakeNews
....the 2016 election with interviews, speeches and social media. I had to beat #FakeNews, and did. We will continue to WIN!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 1, 2017
My use of social media is not Presidential - it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL. Make America Great Again!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 1, 2017
The most controversial tweet is a video of Donald Trump a few years ago during a wrestling match, except the man's face he is wrestling has been replaced by the CNN logo. The video was originally posted on Reddit by an extreme Reddit user. CNN quickly came back with a statement regarding the video and how it is "a sad day when the President of the US encourages violence against reporters. Instead of preparing for his overseas trip, his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, dealing with North Korea and working on his healthcare bill, he is involved in juvenile behaviour far below the dignity of his office. We will keep doing our jobs. He should start doing his.”
Members of Congress react to Trump's tweets
Members of Congress took the time to react to the tweets and video despite being a holiday weekend. Democrat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi commented on how, "Violence & violent imagery to bully the press must be rejected. This July 4 celebrate freedom of the press, guardians to our democracy." She was echoed by Republican senator Ben Sasse who added, “There’s an important distinction to draw between bad stories or crappy coverage and the right that citizens have to argue about that and complain about that and trying to weaponise distrust.”
Other members of congress mentioned how rhetoric the President is using could perpetuate violence against reporters and journalists. Yet, Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert thinks it is ridiculous of anyone to regard the video as a threat, even though it shows Trump physically attacking CNN.
He summed up his twitter rant with an overview of his achievements as President thus far, and then went straight back to other topics.
At some point the Fake News will be forced to discuss our great jobs numbers, strong economy, success with ISIS, the border & so much else!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 3, 2017
