Even before Disney announced that Star Wars Episode VII would be released in 2015 and that JJ Abrams would be taking the helm speculation was running rife on whether the original three leads, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, would return to a galaxy far, far away. It now seems certain that at least one of the stars will be reprising the role that made them a household name.
In a Q&A with Palm Beach Illustrated, Carrie Fisher confirmed what many fans have been hoping for – she will be reprising the role of Princess Leia Organa (Solo) for Episode VII. When asked how she saw Leia in this film, she replied with characteristic Fisher wit, “Elderly. She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home”. She further commented “I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle”. And she thinks that the bagels buns and gold bikini could make a welcome return: “probably she has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized”.
I love the idea of cameos of Luke, Leia and Han but hope that they stay true to the characters as well as be realistic of their age and ability. Luckily George Lucas has handed the reins on or else we might have ended up with a CGI Leia jumping around continuing to hunt the remnants of the Galactic Empire with Carrie Fisher’s head on her shoulders.
