Instagram has done it again. They’ve started another hashtag trend to show support for people who are dealing with things such as suicide and depression. Today on Instagram, users were drawing blue hearts on their wrists and posting pictures using “#antisuicideday”.

Much like The Semicolon Project, this is designed to show those of us who are depressed and suicidal that there are people in the world who care and who don’t want us to disappear. The hashtag currently has over 6000 pictures on Instagram of people telling their stories of survival, of loss and of support.

While most of the stories are sad, some of them really show the true nature of human willpower. When you’re somebody who cuts, it becomes an addiction. And like any other addiction, you have to fight it with will power. Not many people can, but for these people to get onto the internet and tell their stories of fighting back against the blade it makes you realize that the people everybody ignores for being “emo” or “crazy” or “depressed” are the strongest of us all.

I applaud you, social media. You’ve somehow managed to turn our addiction to the internet into a way to be strong and to support one another through the darkest times. Keep doing this, whatever this is, because it helps. It brings those of us who need support the support we need.
