Anya Taylor-Joy is keeping things creepy, as she is rumored to be teaming up with director Robert Eggers for a remake of Nosferatu. This will be the second time the actress and director have worked together. The first time being the mega horror hit, The Witch.
The legacy of Nosferatu
Nosferatu, the acclaimed silent film from 1922, has left an impressive legacy for the remake to live up to. Critic Roger Ebert even added the original film to his list of “The Great Movies.” The story, which was an unofficial adaptation of Dracula, follows the vampire Count Orlock as he buys property in Germany and eventually becomes enamored with his real estate agent’s wife.
“Here is the story of Dracula before it was buried alive in clichés, jokes, TV skits, cartoons and more than 30 other films. The film is in awe of its material. It seems to really believe in vampires,” he says of the film. “It knows none of the later tricks of the trade, like sudden threats that pop in from the side of the screen. But Nosferatu remains effective: It doesn’t scare us, but it haunts us.”
Scheduling conflicts almost prevented Taylor-Joy from joining Nosferatu
Though negotiations are still ongoing, it would seem that Eggers wanted to get Taylor-Joy involved early in the process, but her involvement in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and her subsequent popularity following the hit film made scheduling conflicts an issue. Currently, she is involved in the upcoming X-Men film, New Mutants, as well as the sequel to Split.
It would seem that Taylor-Joy has an penchant for all things spooky, as her previous work with Eggers on The Witch earned her serious acclaim, including a nomination for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor and a win at the Gotham Awards for Breakthrough Actor.
No date had been scheduled for the release of Nosferatu.
