England-based street artist Banksy has started a month-long residency in New York City titled, Better Out Than In, where, his website states, he is attempting to “host an entire show on the streets of New York.”
His first piece was found on a wall in Chinatown and is named, The Street Is In Play. It depicts a young boy standing on another boy’s shoulders reaching for a can of spray paint in a “Graffiti is a Crime” sign.
Only hours after the stencil was painted on October 1st the sign was removed only to be replaced with a fitting sign reading, “Street Art Is a Crime” by a group called Smart Crew. The next day the entire thing was covered with white paint.
A second piece, on 25th Street between 10th and 11th, was found today and has already been vandalized by graffiti. This one consisted solely of the words, “This is my New York accent” in a classic graffiti font followed by “…normally I write like this.” in a smaller and different font.
A third stencil was posted to Banksy’s Instagram and is of a dog peeing on a fire hydrant. The hydrant has a thought bubble that says, “You complete me…” It is unknown how long it will be before this is also altered, but judging by the first two it shouldn’t be long.
Banksy’s website provides toll-free numbers to call that provides an audio guide for certain works. The audio commentary provided is humorous in nature with the most recent one starting with, “You are in Midtown Manhattan. Are you looking at one of the great artworks of the 21st century? If so, you are in the wrong place. You should be looking at a stencil of a dog peeing on a hydrant.”
