With Peter Capaldi now firmly at the helm of the Tardis, the question on everyone’s lips is finally being answered – just what is he going to wear? The BBC has released the first official photograph of Capaldi’s 12th Doctor Costume – and there’s not a bit of tweed in sight.

Having firmly left that cool bow tie on the floor of the Tardis at Christmas, Capaldi cuts a sharp, classy figure. Dressed almost all in black, he looks sleek and smart, but the red trim to his jacket gives the Doctor’s new incarnation a mysterious and almost magical look. And if Capaldi wasn’t already looking cool enough – he’s wearing a very stylish pair of patent classic black Doc Martens boots.

Discussing his new costume, Capaldi said, “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent rebel Time Lord.”

Executive producer Steven Moffat also added, “New Doctor, new era, and of course, new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

It’s widely expected that Capaldi, a lifelong fan of the show, will portray an edgier incarnation of the Doctor than his recent predecessors, and with an outfit like this, we truly believe BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore when she says “the Twelfth Time Lord means business.”

However, with the quirky edge of those Doc Martens and the suspected cardigan beneath that very sleek jacket, Capaldi seems to be holding onto the zany aspect of the Doctor too.

Filming is now under way for the show’s eighth series, which will air in autumn this year. Whilst it’s still a long wait for Whovians, at least this photograph will give them a bit of an insight into this new regeneration of everyone’s favourite “madman with a box”.
