In celebration of their 5th anniversary, power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce ventured off to Cuba for a romantic getaway. They enjoyed walking along the beach, smoking Cuban cigars, and a performance by the country’s most popular musicians. Looks like they had a great time, however, the trip has the couple under great scrutiny. As a result of Cuba’s poor record of human treatment and political turmoil, there are heavy restrictions on American’s traveling to the country. Bey and Z had to receive special authorization for their trip from the Treasury Department.
The entire ordeal is under great criticism from Congress, especially from Florida Republican Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, who represent communities of Cuban heritage. Their stance is that the trip is disrespectful to the people who had to undergo the devastating consequences of Castro’s regime. They both have issued a letter to the Treasury Department requesting an investigation on the trip. So far the Treasury has not responded back, although they do claim to be reviewing it and plan to “act accordingly”.
Thoughts: Fun getaway or political no-no?
