Close your eyes and think back to your middle school science lessons. There is one man that stands stark against all of the information you have forgotten, Bill Nye the Science Guy. Who better to invite as a guest for your show on Earth Day, other than the man that made science fun? Exactly.
The TODAY Show seized this opportunity, including a segment on their Saturday show where co-host Hoda Kotb asked the audience a series of science related questions in a segment called "What on Earth?" If they produced the right answer the winner received $100; if they answered incorrectly they received a signed copy of Hoda’s book. Kathie Lee Gifford, co-host, was seated with Nye inside the studio where Nye explained the correct answers. Except Gifford seemed completely uninterested in anything the famous scientist had to say.
The awkwardness began when Nye seemed thrown off that the losers were ‘punished’ with Hoda’s book. Gifford proceeded to make faces and sighs of disapproval when Nye offered facts and explanations to the questions.
The co-hosts are known for their on air drinking, regularly offering their guests beverages as well. Some speculated that Gifford had too much to drink as she swayed in her seat and disrespected the one man that the entire world seems to idolize.
More than 20 years after his hit show aired on PBS, Nye has a new show out on Netflix titled Bill Nye Saves the World. The viewer reactions vary, ranging from praise for the star to criticism regarding the shows production. Comedy type sketches are added into segments; this can leave the viewer feeling over stimulated since the topics themselves are so involved and elaborate.
Regardless of the show’s reception, Nye’s fame proceeds him and viewers were shocked to see how uncomfortable Nye was from Gifford’s treatment. The interactions are a struggle to watch, but Nye still entertains viewers with facts like if black flowers really exist. Watch the clip below.
