It’s a one in a lifetime moment that you might have dreamed of, one that you never expected in a million years to happen. It’s a moment that is seen in a video that’s taking the Internet by storm.
It happened after Joel had performed at Vanderbilt University during a question-and-answer session with the singer. A college freshman, Michael Pollack, stood up and posed what had to be the question he’s been waiting to ask his whole life. “My favorite song of yours is ‘New York State of Mind.’ I was very fortunate to play with Richie Cannata many times in New York City, and I was wondering if I could play it with you.”
The crowd erupted into wild cheers and after a couple of seconds Joel simply replied “okay,” the student went onstage, and Joel asked him, “What do you play? You play piano? What key do you do it in?” “What key do you want it in?” Pollack quickly fired back.
The talented freshman then showed that he wasn’t just talk. From the first chords, it was clear this random student plucked from the crowd had talent. The college freshman stole the show with his impeccable skills, and the crowd went wild for the once in a lifetime performance. After it was all over Billy Joel certainly seemed impressed. “Remember the name,” he advised the audience. “Guy’s got chops!”
