The first time I heard Bishop Briggs was on Spotify when her song ‘The Way I Do’ and I was hooked right then. Briggs has released EP’s previously, but Church of Scars marks her first debut album which dropped on April 20th. Her sound is soulful while also playing with the modern sound so many artists are known for, but her voice shines among the rest. Her music uses more then just instruments and vocals making he standout in the music industry. I am going to give you a track by track review of this phenomenal album.

‘Tempt My Trouble’ – The album starts here with an upbeat song which showcases softer vocals then Briggs usually uses. As an opener, it sets the mood but doesn’t sound like her normal sound, until it breaks down later.

‘River’ – The second song is one I’ve been listening to for a while, and it’s outstanding. What makes this track so special is the sounds used to back her vocals. It’s mesmerizing.

‘Lyin’ – A slower song after the first two but it allows us to focus on her lyrics. Briggs is an amazing songwriter and she tells stories through her work, ‘Lyin’ is a perfect example of her talents.

‘White Flag’ – One of my favorites on the album, it breaks up the middle really well while also setting the stage for the album’s second half. Briggs speak sings, which is rare, to emphasize the song’s tempo and then lets loose.

‘Dream’ – On this track, we get deceived because it begins like sweet love song but breaks out into more of a longing. The lyrics in this one shine again as her vocals soar.

‘Wild Horses’ – A simple acoustic guitar paired with Briggs’ voice makes for amazing song and as her songs do, it breaks out into a more intricate sound during the chorus. This one is another favorite.

‘Hallowed Ground’ – Briggs compares her own soul to hallowed ground in a powerful song where she states she can’t be bought. This song is empowering but not in the common way because she shares each flaw and why she’s now unbreakable.

‘Water’ – A full blown ballad and exactly where the album should be at this point of its story.

‘The Fire’ – Another amazing song along the album’s journey picking the pace up once more as it nears its end.

‘The Hi-Lo (Hollow)’ – This song closes Briggs’ work through a soft beginning leading into a strong finish.

Final thoughts: Church of Scars is an outstanding album, not to mention a debut for Bishop Briggs. Each song carries the album from one to the next flawlessly, depending on her vocals and lyrical abilities to paint us a picture and she does it. Go listen to all of these songs, we’ve put one down below to give you a taste. Do you already love Bishop Briggs? Tell us your thoughts!
