Bob Newhart announced he was planning to return to The Big Bang Theory.

Upon winning his first career Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday night, stand-up comedian and actor Bob Newhart from The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, commented backstage on his next project.

“There’s a script I’ll be doing in October, and I’m pretty sure I play Professor Proton in that, but he might have given up his science thing. That’s up to Chuck [Lorre] and the writing team.”

We first saw Bob Newhart on The Big Bang Theory in season six episode twenty-two ‘The Proton Resurgence’ where he starred as Professor Proton.

In proper Big Bang fashion this episode offered plenty of laughs. Bob Newhart’s performance was just hilarious and his return is highly anticipated. We cannot wait to hear why the professor is back and what humorous situations his reappearance will cause.

Newhart explained why Sunday marked his first Emmy award in over 50 years of performing. “I just felt the kind of stuff I do doesn’t win awards. I didn’t want to go through the process, the disappointment,” he continued “So maybe for six years, three of The Bob Newhart Show and three of Newhart,I didn’t bother submitting my name. That way I could sit at home and say, ‘I would have won.’ The best answer is really, the years I was nominated, there were better people in the category than me. You could try to put it another way, but that’s the truth.”

Newhart received a standing ovation while accepting his Emmy award.

“The standing ovation tonight really threw me,” Newhart mentioned “I was totally unprepared for that. This is from your peers.”

As a comedic actor of such standing we know his return to the comedic world of science will lead to more great episodes (and perhaps more awards).

The Big Bang Theory season seven premieres at 8 pm on Sept. 26th on CBS.
