Jiah Khan, 25, an aspiring Bollywood actress, was found dead in her apartment late Monday night. Local media is reporting that the young actress was discovered by her mother and that she had apparently hung herself, though no suicide note was found.
Khan, born Nafisa Khan, appeared in her first Bollywood production in the film Nishabd, starring opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The film was loosely based on Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, and was considered controversial.
Local Deputy Police Commission, Chhering Dorje, stated that: “Nafisa Khan, who is known as Jiah Khan, was found hanging by her mother at around 10:45 p.m. India time at her residence on the first floor of Sagar Sangeet [her apartment building]. Dorje then added: “Her body has been taken to the hospital, where a postmortem will be conducted to find the cause of her death.”
Khan was a New York native, but grew up in London before deciding to set up shop in India to pursue her acting dreams.
Only time will tell if more evidence will come to light, or if this tragedy will simply be classified as a suicide.
