It appears as though when James Bond returns to the big screen next year, he could be bringing one of the most iconic villains of all time along with him.
Sources are claiming that Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the bald criminal mastermind known as much for his white Turkish Angora cat as his ruthlessness, is set to make a return in the as yet untitled twenty-fourth film in the James Bond series.
Reports indicate that Christoph Waltz, the actor best known for his Academy Award winning roles in Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained has been tapped to play 007’s arch nemesis.
The head of the criminal organization SPECTRE, Ernst Stavro Blofeld is perhaps the quintessential movie villain. In his first few appearances he was only seen from behind with his cat, which became an enduring image of the character. While he has been portrayed by a number of actors and as having different appearances, he is perhaps best remembered from his appearance in You Only Live Twice where he is portrayed as bald with a distinctive scar over his eye. This image has become the stereotypical image of the criminal mastermind, directly influencing characters from Austin Powers’ nemesis Dr. Evil to Doctor Claw, Inspector Gadget’s arch-enemy.
Blofeld appeared in six Bond films from 1963 to his final appearance and apparent death in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only. The character has not been mentioned since due to the legal battles that existed over the rights to certain aspects of the Bond franchise over the past fifty years. This legal battle ended last year when Bond produces Danjaq and distributors MGM acquired all rights to the franchise.
Bond 24 is slated for release on November 6, 2015.
