Captain America: The Winter Solider Begins Production!

According to a report from EW, today marks the first official day of filming for Captain America’s next chapter. Captain America: The Winter Soldier will take place in the present day unlike the first film which took place primarily during World War II. In addition, Marvel has also released the first image from behind-the-scenes.

We can presume that the action of the sequel takes place shortly after the events of last summer’s The Avengers as the EW article states that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will have major supporting roles. The article goes on to quote Marvel’s official logline of the film as:

“Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.”

Other details of the film include that the villain of the film, the Winter Solider, is -SPOILER ALERT- a Soviet experiment that used the body of Rogers’ medically resurrected and enhanced best pal Bucky (Sebastian Stan –who is set to return for the sequel despite seemingly plunging to his death in the first film).

As well, a the article reveals that Hollywood legend, Robert Redford will be playing Alexander Pierce, a former agent who had settled into undercover sleeper status before being pulled back in to help run the organization (S.H.I.E.L.D.)

We will also be seeing Hayley Atwell, who played Steve’s love interest in the first movie, most likely in a flashback. Toby Jones will also return as HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola.

Emily VanCamp is set to play Agent 13 but if you know the comics, Agent 13 is – SPOILER ALERT – Sharon Carter. Sometime Sharon has been known to be either Peggy’s daughter or niece but EW speculates that given the time frame of the new movie, Sharon is more than likely to be Peggy’s granddaughter or great niece.

Set for an April 4, 2014 release, Captain America: The Winter Solider is part of Marvel’s Phase 2 series that includes next month’s Iron Man 3 and November’s Thor: The Dark World.
