Having been playing violin and piano as well as singing in choirs since she was three, Carey Renee has grown up with music being a key part of her life. After spending ten years as a nurse helping sick children, she’s now reconnected with music, begun writing and finding her voice again. The strength of that connection and her undeniable talent as a singer is showcased on her debut single “House Is Burning”, the video for which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere.
Carey says of the single: “This song, “House Is Burning”, is very personal to me. It was written about a situation where I felt betrayed and abandoned by some people that I really love. As I was going through this painful situation, I reached out to a musician friend of mine, Erin Boheme, to ask if she wanted to help me start recording some music. She was similarly going through a rough patch and we started doing these songwriting/therapy/wine sessions. After one of those sessions, Erin had the inspiration for the concept for this song based on a bunch of notes and things we had talked about, and she started a good chunk of the lyrics. We then headed out to LA to meet up with an old friend of Erin’s, Dru DeCaro, and his partner Adam Kobylarz, to finish writing, produce and record the track. This song is the first that the four of us created together – and the first song I’ve written professionally – and we wrote and recorded it the first evening we met, in about 10 hours. We’ve since written about a dozen more songs but this is the one that started it all!”
Asked about the inspiration behind and idea for the visuals, she adds: “For the video, I really wanted to show the behind-the-scenes process of writing the song and creating the video, as this single debut is my first experience professionally writing and recording. I completely changed my career about two years ago after spending over a decade working in pediatric critical care as a nurse practitioner, and I wanted this video to express my transition back to music. I also wanted to include my co-writing & producing team since they really helped bring this dream to life for me and have been so encouraging of me along the way. We worked with an amazing team out of Chicago, director JP Calubaquib and his studio partner photographer Zoe Rain. Since the song is so personal to me there were quite a few moments that I cried during filming, but I think that emotion is beautifully captured in this video and I’m proud to share this vulnerable yet powerful song with the world.”
