Castle: 08×05, The Nose

There’s more than one way to sniff out a criminal, as Castle and Beckett find out on this week’s “Castle”, entitled “The Nose”.

Who knows Beckett loves Castle and vice versa? “The Nose” knows.

Let’s find out what happened on this week’s Castle:

In this week’s cold open, we see a blonde woman driving around a parking lot and almost knocking down a man dressed in a suit with a silver briefcase. After leaving her car, she runs to the elevator and hears two gunshots ring trough the cement laden walls. As she tries to escape, the killer joins her, balaclava-clad and gun-laden in a tiny confined elevator.

Meanwhile, back at the precinct, Ryan and Espo are waiting on their sergeant’s exam results, and Castle turns up with champagne for both—and also to woo Beckett. However, when Ryan fails the exam, there is a sneaky switch, and Castle congratulates him, commiserates Ryan, and gets involved in this week’s case.

The victim was named Justin Fetcher, and he received two shots to the chest and his briefcase was robbed. Ryan and Espo track down the witness, who has hyperosmia, and she informs them that they smell revolting.

What a sweetheart.

So Castle meets her and recruits her to sniff out the killer. They organise a sniff lineup with their lead suspect, and it turns out he’s not the killer. Bounty hunter Hayley makes an appearance as she has been hired to retrieve what was in the briefcase — a lost Van Gogh painting.

It turns out Justin was a transporter. Yes, like the movie.

So, while Hayley works with Beckett, Castle works with Mia aka The Nose. They track down the new lead suspect, another transporter, who was hired to retrieve the painting as Justin had stolen it.

This is after Espo gets shot in the ass by Ryan.

Let’s back up: Esposito and Ryan are checking out their new suspect when there is open fire. Ryan sees a shadow through a wall and fires, only to shoot Javi in the ass.

Let him now be known as Ass-posito.

So Castle and Mia trap the victim in his car, and he informs them that Justin gave him the painting. However, Mia informs them it smells like a forgery. So we’re back to square one.

Mia begs Castle for home-cooked, steamed food before she gets hangry, and he obliges. It turns out she’s a huge fan of Martha and is only delighted to be there. In fairness, who doesn’t love Martha?

Anyway, the assistant of an art dealer, questioned briefly earlier in the episode and played brilliantly by Keegan-Michael Key, turns up to Castle’s house wielding a gun. It turns out the Van Gogh was stolen from his family. Castle knocks him out, but ends up breaking Mia’s nose in the process. Ouch.

So Castle and Beckett investigate the murder scene together, and sparks are flying before they find DNA evidence from the killer on the wall beside the air conditioner.

The murderer is, in fact, the victim’s brother who had a serious gambling problem and wasn’t happy that Justin asked him to paint a forgery — only to give the original to the rightful owners rather than sell it.

Case closed.

Other notables:

-Lots of Ass-posito jokes

-Lucy, voiced by Aubrey Plaza, is a welcome addition to the Castle household

-Beckett loves Castle, Castle loves Beckett. Why can’t these crazy kids just work it out?

Until next time, Castle fans.
