It looks like Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal may be dusting off their vocal chords, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the two have gone through a vocal audition to join the film adaptation of the famed Stephen Sondheim musical.
The two Hollywood heartthrobs would join the already announced Meryl Streep (as the evil witch) and Johnny Depp (as the mischievously debonair wolf) in the live-action Disney adaptation, helmed by go-to musical director Rob Marshall.
Although neither actor has showed off their pipes on the silver screen, the vocal audition must have gone well because, according to THR, offers are expected to be extended to both men. Pine and Gyllenhaal would portray the princes of Rapunzel and Cinderella respectively.
Into the Woods, with music by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, goes deep into the world of famed fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Cinderella to find out just what happens after happily ever after. The musical, which originally opened on Broadway in 1987 and was revived in 2002, is the recipient of 5 Tony awards collectively.
Filming is expected to begin this fall. While no other casting has been announced, the production is said to have attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
