As we reported on Friday, the Cannes Film Festival was rocked on Friday night by a man who fired shots into the air during a live news broadcast.
The French TV station Canal+ was interviewing main competition jury panel members Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil when a man fired off a starting pistol forcing all within the vicinity to flee.
Following the incident, Waltz spoke to Britain’s Daily Mail about the experience.
“I was on a panel at the Studio Canal platform off the beach when a man produced a gun. I think it was a pistol and he fired but luckily for me they were blanks.
“Then he shouted he had a grenade and again luckily for me there was no grenade… I don’t know who he was or where he came from or what his problem was”.
While the incident happened during a live broadcast, many at the Festival did not know about it till later that evening. Following his interview, Waltz went to Eden Roc restaurant for a dinner hosted by London-based film producer and magazine publisher, Charles Finch. It was here that many were first informed of it. It is reported that Waltz appeared “composed and unfazed” when retelling the incident, saying “I’m fine there’s nothing to worry about now”.
At the dinner, he spoke to Showbiz 411 praising his bodyguard “I had a very good bodyguard who moved fast and got me out of there” and provided his own theory on the gunman and his motives “We thought maybe it was a joke or something to do with Occupy Cannes. I think he was just crazy”.
Not many details about the incident have been released following the gunman’s quick apprehension and arrest. Canal+ presenter, Michel Denisot told France 24 that before the gunman fired he turned to a woman who was next to him and said “if I were you, I wouldn’t stick around here”.
