San Diego Comic-Con 2016: Preview Night Recap

San Diego Comic-Con is off to a great start and we can’t wait to share it with you! Check out some of tonight’s highlights and stay tuned for more!

Good evening, fair readers! If you made it onto the convention floor this evening, we hope you had fun! If you didn’t have a chance to get Preview Night access, this post is for you!

Preview Night in years past was always a laid back affair. There was no pushing, no shoving, no waiting in lines that take about as long as Splash Mountain during peak Disneyland times in summer.

While this year was intense, it was a lot of fun! There were several new things to see, and it was nice to see some of my favorite vendors get the respect they deserve with bigger booths. Underground Toys can actually be seen – and they’re on the inside of an aisle this year!

There were so many things to see tonight, but I’ll give you some of my favorites!

Star Trek 50th Anniversary Art Exhibit

Located at the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Exhibit on 5th Avenue, this exhibit is something you should not miss! The artists are amazing, and their art is absolutely phenomenal!

Not only do we get to see classic Star Trek: The Next Generation art, but there are plenty of installments that put a fun spin on our favorite deep space crew. There were sculptures of starships, babies, and even a cereal box – so logical even Klingons eat it!

I got to talk to a few of the artists and even Adam Nimoy himself! Mr. Nimoy was so kind and appreciative of everyone’s love and support of the franchise his father helped build. It was truly an honor to speak with him, see some of his favorite pieces in the exhibit, and tell him a bit about what we do here at PopWrapped!

Free Books!

You can grab free books down on the convention floor! I didn’t get to grab as much as last year, what with all the cool swag I got from other booths, but the publicity game is strong this year!

These giveaways are usually once per hour, and inventory goes fast, so be sure to book it down to the comics/ publishing area (closer to the rightmost side of the convention center, doors A-C).

Comic Books

There are a ton of comic books for sale at these conventions. One comic I picked up at the last minute, Yi Soon Shin: Warrior and Defender, is a limited comic series based on the true story of Admiral Yi Soon Shin during the Imjin War (1592-1598). This Korean naval commander saved his people from Japanese invasion during the war.

They say he could not be defeated on the battlefield.

Got some great historical comic books at Booth 1115! $10 gets all 4 and each is signed by the author! So stoked! 😀

The author was so happy that I stopped by to pick up the series, he gave me a hug!

But seriously, if you have the money, it never hurts to buy something, even if it’s just one comic. Some of these vendors come from a long ways away to be at Comic-Con every year.

Comic-Con Socializing

Not only are these conventions a great place to stock up on your favorite anime/ manga series or get the latest details about your television obsessions (howdy, The Originals) but it’s also great for getting to meet new people.

With Pokemon GO not yet a month old, the servers already crashed on me several times today. But even these moments of downtime were filled with laughs, because several other people were wearing the same expression as me! We got to bond over the terrible traffic on the servers, which evolved into Comic-Con foot traffic, which evolved into what we were looking forward to this year!

If you haven’t yet. I encourage you to find a fellow team member and take on a few gyms – safely, of course! Find a nice spot out of the sun, place a lure on a Pokestop, and let em have it!

Who knows? You may just make a new best friend!

That’s all I have for you today! Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Snapchat (@popwrapped), Instagram, and Twitter for all your San Diego Comic-Con coverage!
