Last night marked Community’s venture in the world of puppetry. The NBC comedy aired the much anticipated “Introduction to Felt Surrogacy” and crafted a clever marketing scheme to go with it. Hoping to tap into the tumblr-verse and boost live viewership, the network hosted the first ever Community GIFathon.
The gist? Watch the show and submit some gifs to the Community tumblr with the hashtag #GreendaleGIFS or #CommunityGIFathon. The best gifs will be awarded prizes. So what is the swag for a killer gif? A signed script, Season 3 on DVD, a fabulous puppet T-shirt, and various Community items. The folks who run the tumblr reblogged a few gifs, but still no word yet on winners.
Community has been struggling since its return and the idea of a live viewing contest is a good one, but a GIFathon seems a bit forced. NBC came in fourth in ratings and fifth for total viewers last night. Viewership for “Introduction to Felt Surrogacy” however, was up 20% and had 3 million viewers. Is it enough to save Community and broaden their fan base? I can’t really answer that, but if anything it shows you that when tumblr is called to action they get shit done.
