Fans of NBC’s cult comedy classic, Community, may have another reason to celebrate the show’s renewal for a 5th season, after the show’s creator has let it slip that he has been invited to return.
During a recording of Harmontown, Dan Harmon’s Podcast, Harmon reportedly made the statement only to then ask that the podcast crew edit out the slip. Soon after, Harmon apparently shrugged his shoulders and said “Ah, fuck it. I don’t care who knows.” He then jokingly stated that he would only return if they brought back Chevy Chase as well, although even Harmon himself couldn’t stop laughing at that idea.
It is unclear if by ‘returning’, Harmon meant that he would revisit his role as showrunner or that he would instead serve as a consulting producer, a title which he was offered, yet in no uncertain terms dismissed and declined at the time of his firing, almost exactly one year ago to the day, saying that it was nothing more than a vanity title. “You may have read that I am technically “signed on,” by default, to be an executive consulting something or other - which is a relatively standard protective clause for a creator in my position. Guys like me can’t actually just be shot and left in a ditch by Skynet, we’re still allowed to have a title on the things we create and “help out,” like, I guess sharpening pencils and stuff”
Is the move to reinstate Dan Harmon merely an attempt to increase ratings for Season 5, after last season’s less than enthusiastic response? Or did Sony Television realise the error of their ways in letting him go to begin with? I guess that’s something we can only speculate about for now, but one thing is for certain, regardless of their reasons for wanting him back, fans of the show the world over, myself included, will be waiting in anticipation for some kind of official announcement.
