The casting directors at Downton Abbey have been very busy during their hiatus. It was recently announced that Daisy Lewis (Doctor Who) has been cast as baby Sybil’s governess and potential love interest for Sybil’s heartbroken father, Tom Branson (played by the lovely Allen Leech).
Downton fans, including myself, are still trying to recuperate from last season’s myriad deaths of key characters. I was in no way prepared for Sybil to depart the Downton world especially not after the birth of her daughter. Fans of the show knew that Dan Stevens’ Matthew would not be returning for season four, no one was expecting his grisly death to rock our worlds. Perhaps Daisy Lewis will be just what the doctor (Clarkson) ordered to be the salve to heal Branson’s gaping and broken heart.
A source close to the show has stated that: “Daisy will become one of Downton's most prominent characters. She wowed producers in her audition and they are delighted to have secured such a brilliant young actress.”
"Her romance with Tom will be one of the main storylines of the series. He will begin to develop feelings for her and they start a secret affair. Tom will have an even bigger role in the new series after becoming the estate manager of Downton. The writers know he is a very popular character and the viewers were gripped by Lady Sybil’s traumatic death."
Daisy is in good company as just one of many notable characters added to the cast. It was recently announced that Paul Giamatti will be joining the cast as Cora’s American, lady-killing brother. Dama Kiri Te Kanawa will also be joining as well as Nigel Harmen and Gary Carr.
Season Four of Downton Abbey will premiere on ITV this fall in the UK and on PBS in America next year.
