Crash Bandicoot celebrates his 25th birthday

The lovable PlayStation answer to Sonic is still in his prime, and fans celebrate his birthday everywhere.

This past week, a classic video game character celebrated a special birthday. Crash Bandicoot, a Sony PlayStation and Naughty Dog creation, was created 25 years ago. The weird orange cartoon character who was always shirtless but somehow found pants that fit him, is now old enough to rent a car. And his insurance has gone down too, right?

The lovable bandicoot graced the first PlayStation console in 1996, and rocketed to fame. The first game is one of the top 10 selling PlayStation games of all time. Although he started out as a PlayStation exclusive, now players on most consoles can play as the wily rascal. It’s apparent gamers worldwide can’t get enough of the marsupial.

Crash Bandicoot is mostly a platformer, but has different levels that sometimes switch up the gameplay like when you ride a polar bear through the arctic or run from a giant boulder, Indiana Jones style. You also get a chance to play as other characters such as Coco, depending on what game you decide to pick up.

The Crash Bandicoot catalogue boasts 20 games (the N.Sane trilogy was re-released), spanning 3 different decades. The games are available on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles, and also PC. The Crash franchise has also moved to mobile gaming with Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! Available on iOS and Android.
