Established New York-bred, Nashville based songwriter Dakota Ryley, was convinced by her mentor to make the shift into pursuing her own career as an artist. 2020 saw Dakota hit the ground running by dropping four singles that showcase her sultry R&B/Pop style, with tracks like “This Feeling” garnering over 80K organic
streams on Spotify.

Taking some time during the heat of quarantine to focus on her writing, Dakota is back with the release of her new single, “My Own Advice”. This stripped-back single introduces a light-hearted tone to what can often be overwhelming emotions.

“My Own Advice is about always taking care of others and realizing in small increments that, that can get exhausting when you forget to take care of yourself. I often do this. I beat myself up when I spend too much time on “me”. But I guess that’s why when you’re flying on an airplane they tell you to put your mask on before anyone else’s; if your happiness is put on the back burner, you can’t serve the relationships in your life well.” – Dakota explains.

Remaining true to her New York roots, Dakota is a hundred percent honest in her writing. Co-written by Anna Kline, both express all too familiar feelings of loneliness and self-doubt, while somehow finding the ability to put on a brave face, supporting family and friends when they most need it. The clean vocals with minimal instrumentation allow for the lyrics to have the room they deserve to be understood and appreciated.

“We wrote in a stripped manner to really portray how hard I am on myself. I’m a perfectionist—which can be beneficial in this industry to always work at my craft— but it can also be detrimental. I catch myself feeding the needs and emotions of others before my own. I never complimented or acknowledged myself and that needed to change. I feel this song is very self-aware and I know people will be able to relate”, says Dakota.
