Glitz, glam, fame, and champagne falling from the heavens…it’s what we all perceive of Liberace’s life. The man had expensive taste and he wasn’t afraid to let everyone see it. But in the new mini-series from HBO, Behind the Candelabra, we get a closer, more in depth look as to what life with and as Liberace was really like. Behind the Candelabra is based on the memoir of Scott Thorson and the ten years he spent with Liberace.
With Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover, Scott Thorson, we see a portrayal of a relationship that defies logic and reasoning, and also gives us a glimpse behind the curtain into a life that Liberace long spent hiding from the public. “He was the biggest act in the world, and the whole time, petrified of his secret coming out,” Damon told EW.
