At a time when happy memories might seem hard to come by or focus on, the new single from California native David Austin called “Cut Hunting”, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, reminisces on good times of the past, offering encouragement to those who hear it to look back into their own pasts and smile at the pleasure and fun they’ve experienced in their own lives.
The track, which blends classic rock and new-age grooves, tells the story of a group of high school kids looking for ways to pass the time. The song is decidedly personal and autobiographical, influenced by David’s own upbringing in Marin County, California, and dives head-first into the innocence of youth and brings with it a new perspective on the wonders and joys of growing up.
In his own words, David says: “‘Cut Hunting’ is a part-real, part-fictional account of growing up in Marin County, CA – just north of San Francisco. I wrote it near the start of the pandemic, when I was back at my parents’ house for a few weeks and all these memories of being a high schooler looking for weekend adventures came back to me. Shopping-center-parking-lot drag races, underage alcohol buy-ups, traversing rolling hills for the best lookout spots, listening to the music we grew up with – it’s all there.”
There’s a nostalgia-soaked emotion present through the lyrics as David connects the past to the future generations, something that it could be argued many more people are doing and thinking about after the last rough few years we’ve all experienced. Ultimately, “Cut Hunting” is, as David explains: “…really just a song to make people dream about their young and wilder days.”
