Although the first season finale of Syfy’s TV series Defiance was aired barely two weeks ago, fans already get to look ahead at what is to come next year. On May 10th, the series was renewed for a second season. At their Comic Con Panel last Friday a lot of new insights were revealed!
The panel at the event included executive producer Kevin Murphy and cast members such as Grant Bowler (Joshua Nolan), Julie Benz (Amanda Rosewater) and Stephanie Leonidas (Irisa). The panel announced to the excited audience that we should expect a lot of changes when the series return in June 2014!
"The goal at the end the end of Season One was to take the chess board and flip it up and knock all the pieces all over the place," Murphy explained to the audience. "Every single character has a reset."
Here’s a quick spoiler-filled look into what to expect from the characters in season two:
Amanda will definitely not be the happy character, as her sister has gone missing and she just lost the mayoral race. Mysteriously, Murphy added that she will also be “in a new line of work.” He added that “you can make of that what you will, but it’s a very interesting line of work.”
Datak will most likely be away from his family for at least the first few episodes. “What happened to him will be explored in the first part of the season,” Murphy said. Tony Curran, who plays Datak, sadly added that “I will not be bathing with my gal at all.”
In the meantime, Stahma will be exploring her increasing power and status that she gained through her new role in the business. “Stahma has taken over the family with Alak as the figurehead,” Murphy explained. He also added that during her time in Defiance, she had been around “other women who are far more liberated” and that “Castithan men put their women in cages. She was trying to control them from within the cage, but maybe this season she’ll get a taste of what it’s like in the outside world.”
During the panel, we also learned that the season premiere will be centred around Irisa. “She will be front and centre of the season premiere,” Murphy said. “We will learn something about it that will raise many, many more questions.”
Additionally, the fact that the series was turned into an MMORPG will also be important throughout the season, and some of the events that happen in the game will return on the series. Therefore, fans may gain a few clues about Season Two if they play the Defiance game.
Murphy also revealed that Sukar was actually meant to die during the razor rain episode, but because actor Noah Danby “was so magnetic and wonderful and fit the top hat so well,” they decided to bring him back into the show, and he will even be making a return in season 2.
Some smaller details include that in season two, the show’s world will expand to include New Los Angeles, there will probably be more Doc Yewll scenes and the New Earth Republic characters will be very interested in whatever might be down in the mines.
Season 2 is scheduled to be aired on Syfy in June 2014, but until then, fans can enjoy themselves with the MMORPG that was released back in April!
